Building Science 1
This module introduces the factors that affects the thermal performance of building. The objectives of this module to facilitate students to create acceptable designs which are sustainable and to create acceptable indoor thermal conditions.
Project 1: Case Study (Identifying Innovative passive design strategies)
This project is a group work that requires students to choose a building in Kuala Lumpur and a building in Singapore that best feature passive design strategy in a tropical climate. The buildings chose should be recognized as Green Building. Then, students need to identify two passive design strategies used for each building and analyze the building. Lastly, students need to gather all the information and write a report about the passive designs used for each building.
The buildings that my group chose were Digi Technology Operation Center, Malaysia and City Square Mall, Singapore. In this project, we identified the passive design used for both buildings and the heat transfer in relation to building and people. We managed to identify the environmental conditions related to site conditions and climate. Besides, we explained the effects of sun on the thermal performance of buildings by using ECOTECT. The effect of insulation, air movement and thermal mass on the thermal performance on the buildings are clearly shown in the reports. We also learned how to study a sun path diagram and wind rose diagram.
Below are the reports on Digi Technology Operation Center and City Square Mall respectively.
