Shape Grammar

This module introduces a method used to produce new and original design languages using the relationship between shapes as opposed to the traditional and conventional method which mainly depends on the designer’s intuition, experience and ideas as well as adaptation from other projects.

In Class Exercises
Students are required to understand different kind of shape grammar rules and develop their skills in producing designs using the shape grammar rules The exercises include the following:
i. Single rule 2-dimensional shape grammar
ii. Single rule 3-dimensional shape grammar
iii. Given two rules 2-dimensional shape grammar
iv. Two rules 2-dimensional shape grammar
v. Two rules 3-dimensional shape grammar

Throughout this 5 exercises, I learned to use different kind of shape grammar methods to produce interesting designs. Besides that, I learned how to create my own shape rules and describe the process to analyse existing designs using shape grammar method.

Final Project – The Shape Grammar of my Future Home
In this projects, students need to produce multiple shape rules and use the shape rules to create multiple design alternatives of their future home. Among the few designs, they are required to choose one interesting design and show the development process of it. The requirement of this home is to have 5 bedrooms, 5 bathrooms, 2 dining rooms, 2 living rooms, 2 kitchen and other supporting spaces.

After this project, I learned how to employ multiple shapes rules grammar to produce new architectural designs from my own sets of rules. Also, I managed to recall back all the knowledge I gain from lectures and exercises to produce a good shape grammar.

  2. Thanks for sharing, do watch out for high-ceilings.

Nothing kills the intamacy of a room like empty space above, they make people look-up and wander. They steal attention from the program of the space.

Also the high-ceilings are not energy-efficiency, nothings sucks energy like heating and cooling empty space. Seriously high-ceilings add no value, it's just poor people idea of luxury.
