Asian Architecture

The module explores the history of South, Southeast and East Asian architecture as a whole within a systematic treatment of architectural design and construction, building science and technology, garden design and city planning through three key themes: sustainability, tradition and modernity & globalisation.

Project 1: Case Study Paper
After having our site visit at Belum Rainforest Resort, we are required to choose a specific research area to investigate contemporary sustainable design practices and issues in Asia. Once the research topic is confirmed, we need generate a good research topic, following by creating a concept mapping.

In this project, I analysed and discussed in depth on the selected research area based on the assigned building, within the framework of sustainable design. Also, I identifed the significant elements of sustainable design through investigation on Belum Rainforest Resort. During the powerpoint presentation, I covered the key issues and themes explored. Lastly, I managed to write a case study paper of 3000-4000 words.

Project 2: Documentation Study
In a group of 5, this project involves the study of STREETS in an Asian city to understand the historical and social aspects of a city by examining the development of tradition, modernization and globalization of streets. Students are required to take 10 pictures each and compile it to become a photobook. An A2 size manual sketched street map (2D or 3D view) with annotations of landmarks or significant elements that reflect the architecture iconography of the street is also required.

My group chose Jalan Raja, Kuala Lumpur as we felt that this street consists of a beautiful history and social aspects of Kuala Lumpur. In this photobook, we describe the historical development of the main strands of Asian architecture. Also, we identified a broad range of issues related to the historical and chronological transitions of Asian architectural history. We even interpret the architectural language in relation to the development of Asian architecture and urbanism based on theme of tradition, modernity and globalization.
